What Happens If You Join the Motorway on Your Driving Test?
If you accidentally join the motorway on your driving test, don’t panic. Many learner drivers worry that they will automatically fail – especially at driving test centres close to motorways, such as Portsmouth Driving Test Centre.

That used to be the general expectation. However, the DVSA changed its guidance in July 2026. If you accidentally join the motorway on your driving test, the examiner may now continue the test instead of stopping it immediately.
Here’s what you need to know.
What Changed?
On 3 July 2026, the DVSA updated its guidance for driving examiners (DT1).
The updated guidance states:
“Every effort must be made to prevent learner drivers from joining a motorway. If a learner driver joins a motorway, the test should continue to the next exit if safe to do so, and a test pass should be awarded if the learner driver completes the rest of the test to the required standard, including all legal requirements.”
This is an important change.
Previously, if a learner accidentally joined the motorway during a practical driving test, the test would normally end. The new guidance allows the examiner to continue the test safely if appropriate.
Will I Automatically Fail?
No.
You will not automatically fail.
Instead, the examiner will assess how you deal with the situation.
If it is safe to continue, the examiner will normally ask you to leave the motorway at the next exit before carrying on with the test.
You can still pass if your driving meets the required standard.
What Should You Do? What Happens If You Join the Motorway on Your Driving Test?
If you accidentally join the motorway during your driving test:
- Stay calm.
- Continue driving safely.
- Build your speed correctly on the slip road.
- Stay in the appropriate lane.
- Listen carefully to the examiner’s instructions.
- Leave the motorway safely at the next available exit.
The examiner is assessing your ability to drive safely, not whether you followed the planned route perfectly.
Don’t Panic If You Take the Wrong Road
Joining a motorway is simply another example of taking the wrong route.
Learners sometimes:
- Miss a turning.
- Take the wrong exit at a roundabout.
- Follow the wrong lane.
- Accidentally join the motorway.
Making a navigation mistake does not automatically mean you have failed.
The important thing is to stay calm and continue driving safely.
A Driving Instructor’s Advice
One piece of advice I always give my learners is:
A wrong turn is rarely the problem. Panic is.
If you realise you’ve made a mistake, don’t rush to correct it.
Instead:
- Stay calm.
- Keep good observations.
- Drive safely.
- Follow the examiner’s directions.
The examiner wants to see that you can deal safely with unexpected situations, just as you would after passing your test.

The DVSA’s July 2026 update is good news for learner drivers.
If you accidentally join the motorway on your driving test, the test no longer has to end immediately.
As long as it is safe to continue and you drive to the required standard, you can still pass.
